Product Description – Quick-setting powdered concrete additive

Quick-setting powdered concrete additive is a developed product consisting of plasticizers, microsilica powder, water-binding agents, catalysts and fillers, polypropylene fibers and setting accelerators, which are presented in powder form. Quick-setting powdered concrete additive is added to dry materials during concrete production, and then water is added to its composition. In addition to increasing slump during concrete production and increasing efficiency and workability due to the presence of a plasticizer in its formulation, this concrete additive prevents water absorption and, as a result, reduces the permeability of hardened concrete. This property is due to the presence of silica fume nanoparticles and sealing materials in the formulation of the quick-setting powdered concrete additive. Also, the polypropylene fibers in this quick-setting powder will increase the mechanical and abrasion properties of concrete. Quick-setting powdered concrete additive is suitable for concreting in cold weather conditions and will cause faster initial setting of concrete. Another advantage of using a quick-setting concrete additive is that it reduces the water-to-cement ratio by about 10 to 15 percent.

In general, these quick-setting powdered concrete admixtures are essential components in modern concrete construction. They accelerate the setting and hardening process, and are especially useful in cold weather. These admixtures improve the workability of concrete, accelerate setting time, increase pumpability, and ultimately strengthen the bond between existing and new concrete.

Consumption rate of quick-setting powdered concrete additive

The correct amount of quick-setting powdered concrete additive is determined by conducting detailed field tests, environmental conditions, and required strengths, but the typical amount of quick-setting powdered concrete additive is 5 to 8 percent of the weight of the cement used. It is recommended that a water-to-cement ratio of 0.4 be considered when adding quick-setting powdered concrete additive.

Maintenance of quick-setting powdered concrete supplements

Duration: One year in original packaging.

Conditions: Away from cold and frost, heat and direct and prolonged sunlight.

Best storage temperature: +10 to +30 degrees

How to use quick-setting powdered concrete supplement

Quick-setting concrete powder additive, which is a subcategory of microsilica products ( microsilica gel ), can be added to the mixture in two ways:

1 – The best way to add quick-setting powdered concrete additive is to first add it to the dry materials, and after combining it with the dry materials, add water to the mixture and mix.

2 – Quick-setting powdered concrete supplement can also be added to ready-mixed concrete.

Note: To achieve complete mixing and a homogeneous and uniform mixture, mixing should be done for at least 1 minute per cubic meter of concrete.

Properties and effects of quick-setting powdered concrete additives

  • 15 to 20 percent reduction in cement grade used
  • Reducing the water-cement ratio by about 10 to 15 percent
  • Possibility of using type 2 cement instead of type 5 cement
  • Acceleration of concrete setting time
  • Achieving early compressive strength
  • Increasing the flexural and tensile strength of concrete
  • Preventing the penetration of chlorine ions and other destructive ions into the concrete
  • Increasing the workability and working time of concrete
  • Ease of pumping and reduced depreciation of concreting equipment
  • Compatible with all types of Portland cements
  • Increasing the compressive strength of concrete by about 40 to 60 percent
  • Reducing concrete permeability and eliminating water absorption
  • Early achievement of compressive strength
  • Increasing the fluidity and slump of concrete
  • Compatible with all types of Portland cement

Applications of quick-setting powdered concrete additives

  • Concreting in cold and icy weather conditions
  • Suitable for producing impermeable and waterproof concretes
  • Ability to make concrete of all concrete structural elements
  • Concreting in areas under attack by destructive chemical ions
  • Concrete construction of piers, bridges, reservoirs, sources, etc.
  • Concrete construction for treatment plants, pools, canals, etc.
  • Suitable for making resistant and durable concrete
  • Production of reinforced concrete by eliminating thermal reinforcements
  • Concrete construction of piers, pools, bridges, tanks, treatment plants, etc.

Mechanism of action of quick-setting powdered concrete additive

When mixing water and cement, the polynaphthalene sulfonate molecules in the quick-setting powdered concrete supplement formulation form a charged membrane around the cement particles, which repels the cement grains from each other in the concrete mixture and thus makes the concrete fluid. Naphthalene sulfonate also prevents the dissolution of ions such as aluminates, which have the highest dissolution rate during the hydration process. Also, after adding silica fume in the powdered concrete supplement to the concrete mixture, the active Sio2 in the silica fume mixes with the free calcium hydroxide solution Ca(OH)2 in the capillary and microscopic pores of the concrete, producing insoluble calcium silicate crystals, which ultimately increases the density of the concrete, reduces its permeability, and enhances some of its properties. Accelerators are also used in the formulation of the quick-setting powdered concrete supplement to accelerate the hydration process by reacting with cement.

Safety of quick-setting powdered concrete additives

  • This concrete additive is not a toxic or environmentally hazardous substance.
  • In case of contact with skin or eyes, wash immediately with plenty of fresh water.
  • It is recommended to wear a mask, gloves, and safety glasses when working with any chemicals.
  • If swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.
