Product Description – Expanding Cement Grout
After placing and leveling the column plates and installing the anchor bolts, the next step is to install and fix the base plates on the foundation in metal frame structures. Due to the high sensitivity and the fact that the prediction of shrinkage or compaction of ordinary mortar in various weather conditions is not easily measured, there is a need for a unique mortar with a special formulation called cement grout, which compensates for the effects of mortar compaction. In certain situations, due to special weather conditions, there is a possibility of more water loss from the mortar due to air temperature and lack of proper curing. In this situation, more free expansion should be considered for the grout so that it can repair the shrinkage caused by water evaporation. Therefore, the use of expanding grout is a good option for grouting under the slab of columns that require more free expansion due to specific environmental conditions. Expanding cement-based grout is formulated and produced from cement, specially graded aggregate, polypropylene fibers, powdered lubricant, and mortar expanding materials. Expanding cement grout is a powerful mortar with a compatible workability time and has high initial and final stability and early maturity. The resistance parameters obtained from the use of expanding grout will be much higher and more powerful than conventional cement mortars. This product has two-stage volumetric expansion characteristics when mixed with water. The initial expansion is the result of the rise of gases and occurs when the powder is mixed with water, and the second phase is due to the chemical reaction of the mortar setting, which begins one or two days after mixing the expanding grout mortar. This product can be used as a ready-to-use mortar in general and interior building works and is very suitable.
This grout cement is a ready-made product in the form of a dry powder that reaches a special consistency and concentration by adding the necessary amount of water. The special expanding grout is usable after being applied and does not crack in the face of high heat and various pressures. It also has the ability to fill the pores of holes and pits due to its controlled expansion.
Expanding grout is a type of mortar or grout that is formulated to increase in volume after application and during the setting process. The characteristics of expanding grout include completely filling empty spaces and cracks and also creating a strong, void-free connection. In addition to its expansion properties, this grout has high chemical and mechanical resistance. Cement-based expanding grout is a suitable choice for construction and industrial applications that require a strong, void-free, and water-resistant connection due to its excellent expansion and filling properties.
Expanding grout packaging
What is the packaging form of expanding cement grout?
25 kg bag
Expansive grout consumption rate
How much expanding cement grout should be used?
By calculating the cross-sectional volume and considering the specific gravity of the expanding grout, the amount of expanding cement-based grout with expansion properties can be determined for the desired surface. However, the amount of cement-based grout used is usually 2350 kg per cubic meter of space. Each 25 kg bag of expanding grout occupies about 13 liters of space.
Maintaining expanding grout
What are the principles of maintaining expanding cement grout?
Duration: One year in original packaging.
Conditions: Keep away from cold and frost, heat and direct and prolonged sunlight.
The best storage temperature is: +10 to +30 degrees.
Method of using expanding grout
What is the correct way to use expanding grout?
- The distance between the bottom of the panels and the concrete surface must be at least 10 mm.
- Make sure the plates are in place and, if necessary, check the flatness of the base plates with a level.
- Please note that the concrete surface must be at least 7 days old before grouting.
- The molds intended for grouting must be resistant to permeability to prevent the grout from leaking out before it sets.
- All surfaces of sections that will be in contact with the expanding grout must be free of any contamination, grease, oil, dust, etc.
- If there are loose spots or flaking on the concrete surface where the expanding grout is applied, remove them from the surface by sanding, water jetting, or any other physical operation until a resistant surface is achieved.
- The surface to be grouted should be irrigated with drinking water before applying the expanding grout so that the grout water is not absorbed by the dry surface and does not crack after application.
- Note that the height of the molds intended for grouting should be 2 to 5 centimeters higher than the base plates.
- To prevent the formation of bubbles when pouring the expansive grout paste, it should be considered as a fluid in large-volume grouting from the head box and in small-volume grouting from a sheet 50 cm wide, the length of which is proportional to the size of the mold wall in the area intended for pouring with a 45-degree slope, so that the grout fluid moves evenly and long.
- Slowly add the powder to the water while the electric mixer (drill + blade) is on and continue mixing until a homogeneous mixture is obtained.
- Choose a suitable container for mixing ready-made expanding cement grout powder with water that has the appropriate capacity for mixing a bag of grout with water.
- To make paste grout, 3.5 liters of water are required, and to produce flowable grout, 4.5 liters of water are required per 25 kg bag.
- For grouting very large sections, it is better to divide the desired section into smaller sections using temporary molds.
- Be sure to always mix an amount of expanding grout powder with water that can be used within 30 minutes of mixing.
- Please note that adding any additives or cement and aggregate to the ready-made grout mixture is not permitted.
- Grouting should always be done from one side and flow to other points under its own weight and fluid pressure. For better flowability, a metal rod or chain can be used as an aid. If the cross section is large, the fluid pressure can be increased by increasing the height.
- Note that in hot weather, expanding cement grout powder should be kept in its original packaging and in a covered space. It is recommended to use cold water for mixing in hot weather to balance the internal temperature of the grout, and to use warm water in cold weather.
- Note that excess air can be prevented from being trapped by providing adequate clearance under the base plates.
- The ambient temperature during grouting should be between 5 and 30 degrees Celsius. Temperatures above 30 degrees will accelerate the setting of the grout, and temperatures below 5 degrees will delay the setting of the expanding grout mortar.
- After grouting is complete and the grout has reached its initial setting, it is recommended to cover the mold and tools with a layer of wet burlap and to prevent the water inside the grout from evaporating, cover the surface of the burlap again with nylon. After grouting, surface curing should be done for 7 days.

Mechanism of action of expanding grout
What is the mechanism of action of expanding grout?
Expandable cement-based grout consists of cement, powdered lubricant, aggregate with a specific grain size, polypropylene fibers and expanding (anti-shrinkage) materials, each of which in turn exerts effects on improving and enhancing the properties of cement grout mortar in the pasty and hardened state. The presence of granulated aggregate in the formulation of expanding grout production will result in the possibility of making a strong mortar with controlled grain size and without the presence of soil or very fine and brittle aggregates. The powdered lubricants present in the formulation of expanding grout production will cause the grout to need less water to become a paste or mortar for productivity. Finally, in addition to increasing fluidity, it will increase compressive strength and improve other mechanical strengths of the mortar. The polypropylene fibers in the structure of the expanding grout also play an important role in the structure of the expanding cement grout by increasing the abrasion resistance and improving some of the mechanical properties of the mortar. The special expanding materials or shrinkage compensating materials in the expanding cement grout provide one of the most important features of the expanding grout, namely, no shrinkage and compensation for the decrease in the volume of the mortar due to hydration and loss of water in the mortar. The amount of free expansion considered for expanding grouts is higher than for other cement-based grouts.
